Most time capsules are buried, but it does not take much digging to unearth the reservoir of stories contained in Burlington, Vermont’s Auer Family Boathouse.

Built in 1928 and situated where the mouth of the Winooski River meets Lake Champlain, the Auer’s have created close ties with both old and new customers.

Following the teachings of their parents, Ida and Charlie Sr., Christine and Charlie Jr., at 92 and 89 years young, have continued to take care of those around them, manifesting norms of reciprocity in their wake.

Whether the Auers realize it or not, they are the social glue in this timeless community, crossing class lines and providing access to the lake for all, whether it be for fishing, sport, or relaxation.
